The Golden Village School - A Fusion of Old and New

A privately funded school that concerns in the Burmese children´s social, emotional and physical development. By emphasizing on social importance, the school welcomes the public to experience the lives of the refugees and celebrate Burma´s festivals. In exchange, the children will learn to communicate better and a new perception from the society towards these invisible children.

A RAY OF HOPE

A splash of light that is reflected on the glossy translucent
surface of the glass panels looks as though it is constantly flowing
to the another end of the building.
The warm lighting gives a 'gold' atmosphere to the atrium, hence the name The Golden
Village where it reflects the many opportunities await for the refugee children.

The white curved atrium symbolizes lotus petals and
enhanced the colourful village in the centre, also reflects the ray of hope of the children.

Underneath the little village huts, you will see refugee children and
local people interacting through face painting, merchandising,
portrait drawing and other interesting activities that initiate interactions between them.

ONE-OF-A-KIND

Take a minute or two to climb the stairs
to have a family or group photo shoot overlooking
the only one-of-a-kind indoor
village in Malaysia.
Or simply celebrate and enjoy watching people down below.

Besides, you will get to see 'behind the scenes' of the beautiful handicrafts
refugee children make where the craft studio lights up to show the interior of it.

Colourful translucent umbrellas, traditional hats or
traditional lanterns, take them with you to the outdoors
and continue celebrating through watching performances or
join the crowd dancing in the park.

SOCIAL IMPORTANCE

Two different purposes at two different times.

It could be a reading space, group work area, group discussion,
socialize or any other activities to take place in these huts during school hours.
While during the festivals, they are places for
activities that initiate interactions with local people.

Even though they are two very different functions at different times,
they are still to emphasize on social importance regardless when and how.

This project enable refugee children to boost
their self-esteem and confidence either through school hours or the events.
They will learn how to communicate better, and get rid of the fear talking to local people.
Also, the negative perception of the public will be shifted and implants the belief of human equality.

THE FESTIVALS

It happens only once in a month when the sun casts the longest shadows of the day.

The orange-blue atmosphere is reflected on the walls of the school.
With the help of the low ambient lighting in the reception,
the space builds curiousity and mystery, but there are constantly moving images on the LCD TV
that gives you a glimpse of what is going on around the school.

Follow the black woven rattan that flows harmoniously with the huge timber structure,
it will lead you to a low ambient gallery.

SIMPLE & VERSATILE

In this gallery, experience the difficulties of the lives of refugees
by going through a series of emotional images that are
portrayed on the white movable walls.

The gallery is not asking for sympathy but to understand their tough journeys in Malaysia.

The white walls enable users to reconfigure the space to their needs
and provides spatial variety in indoor circulation.

You can create your very own 'huts' by just moving the walls for more imaginative play.

This white walls are arranged in a way that will transport you to the atrium
where you begin to see the hope that is reflecting in the refugee childrens' eyes.

Something for Everyone - Social Cooking

Most neighbourhoods have community parks. They are the places where people come and spend quality time together. So why not start investing into our community parks? The idea is to bring people with the power of food. A combination of a kitchen and healthy food store for people to pop in to either buy before or after work, or cook with your friends and families during weekends.
